A recent study reveals that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch activating and you become starving," described one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
