The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.

Her exit from Bayern was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major uplift to the team's attacking options. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

Securing the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
