The New Mayor Pledges a 'Fresh Chapter' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Address
During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his administration.
A Historic Mayor
The young political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
- A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating Political Challenges
The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past social media posts.
Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.
