New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD shared video stills Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
