Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
