The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
