"When are you chatting with the band?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There is only a single issue: The author likewise wants to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are far from alone. Multiple celebrated admirers have openly coveted the position.

The evidence suggests a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit gang. Their videos frequently feature them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the ultimate compliment. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to start a band."

"So all are welcome to be the fourth Haim sister."

Historic Nod

The trio have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in consideration for the award.

"I watch the lists every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The project was born from a time of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The themes track breakups and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed toughness required a fresh approach – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

But Haim will forever be their number one commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
