A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
