Afghan Rulers Used Discarded UK Technology to Find Local Nationals That Served With Western Troops, Investigation Hears
A whistleblower has told an official investigation that British authorities left behind classified devices permitting Afghanistan's rulers to identify local individuals that had served with allied troops.
Information Leak Puts Thousands in Danger
Person A, called Person A, stated that people concerned by the information breach were told to change residences and alter their contact details to protect themselves from militant forces.
MPs are investigating the Conservative government's response of a massive disclosure of private information affecting approximately 19k Afghans who had requested to come to Britain to escape the Taliban.
Data Disclosure Happened
A spreadsheet containing their personal data, comprising names, phone numbers and in some cases family information, was mistakenly released by a worker employed at UK special forces headquarters in last year.
The incident became known in late 2023, when details of multiple applicants who had applied to settle in the UK surfaced on online platforms.
Taliban Capabilities
It appears there is a misunderstanding that the Taliban do not have the same sort of facilities that western nations possess,” she told MPs.
Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they have it. Should they obtain mobile details, they are able to track your precise location. That is what intelligence groups accomplished.”
When questioned about regarding if authorities owned necessary encryption, the source declared: “They possess all resources.”
Consequences of the Security Lapse
Preliminary research presented to the inquiry suggested that at least 49 relatives and co-workers of Afghans affected by the breach had been executed.
A gag order regarding the leak was put in force in last year and blocked all details concerning it from public disclosure until recently.
Safety Measures
Because she was restricted, Person A and the aid group she was working with informed individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “concerns that certain devices had been breached”.
“We recommended that they moved if they could and switched their phone numbers. That constituted the primary information that, if the Taliban obtained such data, would lead to identification and capture,” the source testified.
Disputed Conclusions
The source argued that internal investigation conducted by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to conclude that the possession of the information by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.
“The thing to remember is that these individuals are not standing up to the Taliban; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves past work history.”
Person A described horrific violence experienced by affected individuals, including electrocution, simulated drowning, and severe beatings.
“Instances include young kids who have had limbs fractured to force the family to disclose hiding places,” the whistleblower revealed.
