A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami-Dade Mayor.
Although not quite at the identical stature as pardoning holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future away from worry.”
The event, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: vibrant, varied, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
